Dawn Quitno Edgerton Receives Distinguished Service Award at ASNC2020 Virtual Scientific Session

‘Tireless Champion of Certification and Maintenance of Certification in Cardiac Imaging'

Please join us in honoring Dawn Quitno Edgerton, MA, champion of excellence in nuclear cardiology and longtime friend to ASNC. Ms. Edgerton received this year's only Distinguished Service Award on Friday, Sept. 25, during the Presidents' Session.

“I feel very honored and grateful to have been selected as a recipient of ASNC's prestigious Distinguished Service Award. To be included among those recognized for their contributions to ASNC and the field of nuclear cardiology is a thrill and a privilege!”  -- Dawn Quitno Edgerton, MA

ASNC's Distinguished Service Award recognizes individuals whose work and dedication to nuclear cardiology and to ASNC have helped ensure quality and safety in the field. “Dawn personifies the award,” wrote ASNC Past President and Nominations Committee Chair Rob S.B. Beanlands, MD, MASNC. “She has worked enthusiastically and tirelessly on behalf of our specialty. I am delighted to see her contributions celebrated with ASNC's Distinguished Service Award.”

Ms. Edgerton's commitment to nuclear cardiology and its practitioners began more than 25 years ago when ASNC was in its infancy and its leaders were working to translate their vision into an organization that would provide high-quality education, contribute to improved care, and address reimbursement challenges. As ASNC's associate executive director, Ms. Edgerton was instrumental in launching programs that accomplished all of these goals and laid the foundation for the important work ASNC is doing today. It is fitting that she was honored at ASNC's 25th Annual Scientific Session since she was the driving force behind the Society's first annual meeting, which was held in Washington, D.C., in 1996.

Ms. Edgerton went on to serve as the executive director of the Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology (CBNC), where she leveraged her leadership qualities, knowledge of the field, and formidable interpersonal skills to transition the CBNC exams from paper to computer and negotiate with the U.S. NRC to maintain the CBNC as the certification-based pathway for authorized user status. Her contributions also are evident in today's Certification Boards of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (CBCCT) and Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CBCMR) and in the Inteleos portfolio.

“If you ask any of the physicians why they volunteer their time for the CBNC, they will invariably tell you that a big part of the reason is working with Dawn,” wrote the ASNC leaders who together nominated Ms. Edgerton for ASNC's Distinguished Service Award. “She has been the lifeblood of the CBNC for more than 17 years.”

Even as Ms. Edgerton has begun transitioning to new interests, her advocacy for quality in nuclear cardiology continues, as she is helping CBNC subject matter experts begin development of a novel question type that will transition maintenance of certification toward greater value.

In addition to honoring Ms. Edgerton, the ASNC2020 Presidents' Session recognized Sharmila Dorbala, MD, MPH, MASNC, with the ASNC Leadership Award; recipients of ASNC's 2020 Service Awards; this year's Masters (MASNC) and Fellows (FASNC) designations; Journal of Nuclear Cardiology awards; and ASNC/IANC Research Fellowship Award. Watch for reports on these awardees.
