Senators John Boozman (R-AR) and Peter Welch (D-VT) led a group of 39 senators on a letter urging Senate leaders to act to blunt the 2.8 percent cut to Medicare physician payment that is scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1, 2025. It is the fifth consecutive year that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued a fee schedule that decreased payments for clinicians.
“Persistent payment cuts undermine the ability of independent clinical practices – especially in rural and underserved areas – to care for their communities,” the senators wrote to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. “Some practices have limited the number of Medicare patients they see, or the types of services offered.” The letter expresses the senators’ willingness to work with Senate leadership and colleagues to address the Medicare physician pay cut.
ASNC recently asked clinicians to encourage their members of Congress to support legislation in the House of Representatives. The Medicare Patient Access and Practice Stabilization Act (H.R. 10073) would, if passed into law, eliminate the pay cut and increase Medicare’s physician payment rates in 2025.
