Dr. Vasken Dilsizian Traces Nuclear Cardiology’s Remarkable Journey, Forecasts ‘Another Quantum Leap’

Vasken Dilsizian delivered the Mario Verani Memorial Lecture at ASNC2024.
The audience at ASNC2024’s opening plenary session watched in rapt attention as Vasken Dilsizian, MD, MASNC, told the story of nuclear cardiology’s journey, recounting one milestone at a time the discoveries that have brought the field to where it is today. Titled “50 Years of Myocardial Perfusion Imaging,” Dr. Dilsizian’s Mario S. Verani Memorial Lecture started in 1968, sharing the back story of fortuitous moments, accidental findings, and brilliant observations that led a generation of great scientists to create an entirely new field and propel it forward.
Dr. Dilsizian’s lecture extended beyond the 50-year mark and beyond perfusion imaging, noting that today’s nuclear cardiology professionals are “witnessing another quantum leap.” 18F-labeled radiopharmaceuticals and molecular imaging are poised to move the field toward the direct interrogation of cellular components, he predicted.
“It is a fantastic field with a bright future,” Dr. Dilsizian concluded. “Vast opportunities lie ahead for nuclear cardiology.”
