Speaking about Clinical Indications for PET Myocardial Perfusion Imaging and Myocardial Blood Flow Quantification

In the few weeks since ASNC published Clinical Indications for PET Myocardial Perfusion Imaging and Myocardial Blood Flow Quantification, clinicians throughout the U.S. have been downloading the statement at a record pace and members are sharing stories about hospitals that are now adopting cardiac PET.

At Yale Medicine in Connecticut, for example, Edward J. Miller, MD, PhD, FASNC, has been talking for years about the value of cardiac PET. “ASNC’s Clinical Indications for PET statement got the attention of our hospital leaders and became a key catalyst for the expansion of cardiac PET in our health system,” he says. “ASNC’s advocacy for PET made this happen!”

Reporting from Chicago, ASNC Treasurer Rupa Sanghani, MD, FASNC, shared that the position paper prompted leaders at a Rush University Medical Center regional site to consider exploring the potential for cardiac PET at that location.

Coverage by Cardiovascular Business has helped to get the word out about ASNC’s position statement. The statement has already been downloaded more than 1,300 times.

Meanwhile, ASNC Past President Gregory S. Thomas, MD, MPH, MASNC, applauded the statement, which was published as his colleagues were welcoming the addition of cardiac PET at the University of California, Irvine. “The advancement of technology, quantitative flow measurement, and new radiotracers make PET a game-changer for patients and their physicians,” he says.

“It’s gratifying to see the immediate impact of the statement,” says ASNC Past President Timothy M. Bateman, MD, MASNC, the statement’s lead author. “I expect it will continue, especially as physicians learn that ASNC is available to help them make a successful transition to PET. In my experience, once you start with PET, you never go back.”
