Health Policy Memo > Access to Imaging Services Congressmen Introduce American Medical Isotopes Production Act July 22, 2009 On July 21, 2009, Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.) introduced bipartisan legislation to address the ongoing medical isotope supply issues experienced worldwide. The American Medical Isotopes Production Act aims to ensure a "robust and reliable supply" of medical isotopes, specifically addressing the current shortage of Mo-99. "The United States if facing a crisis in nuclear medicine," said Rep. Markey. "Because of serious technical problems in other countries, fifty thousand critical procedures performed in this country every day will soon vanish. We simply cannot let this happen...The American Medical Isotopes Production Act will ensure that Americans have access to these vital medical procedures by establishing a robust domestic production of molybdenum-99 for medical uses." The legislation has been endorsed by ASNC and 13 other organizations involved with the current Mo-99 shortage, including the American College of Cardiology, American College of Radiology, and SNM.
