ASNC Submits Comments on Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System

September 14, 2007

n September 2007, ASNC submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regarding the agency's proposed regulations for the 2008 Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System (HOPPS).

ASNC's comments centered on CMS's proposals to bundle several nuclear cardiology procedure codes (for example, CPT codes 78465, 78478, and 78480) into a single ambulatory payment classification.  In addition to opposing this bundling approach, ASNC raised strong objections to the agency's proposal to bundle all diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals into clinical procedure ambulatory payment classification rates based on CMS's view that diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals are supplies.

ASNC also signed onto a joint comment letter to CMS from several members of the cardiology community regarding concerns over the agency's placement of the category III cardiac computed tomography (CT) and CT angiography codes.
