Protocols form the foundation of all nuclear cardiology laboratories. They guide the work of the laboratory staff and reflect the experience and cumulative knowledge of what works best in a particular laboratory.
According to The Standards for Nuclear Cardiology, a nuclear cardiology laboratory must have the following protocols:
- Patient identification
- Pregnancy and breast feeding screening
- Diagnostic imaging procedures
- Exercise and/or pharmacologic testing
- Imaging and non-imaging equipment quality control
- Radiation safety and radioactive materials handling
- General administrative (e.g. confidentiality, informed consent, medical emergencies)
See The Standards for Nuclear Cardiology, Part II for more information about required protocols.
