Patient Education, Reassurance, and Motivation

For a CAD management strategy to be successful, patients must understand the causes, risk factors, and processes of the disease. Applicable risk factors should be thoroughly explained to each patient, and he or she should understand which are modifiable and which are not.

Patients also need reassurance that CAD can be managed effectively and that cardiac events can be prevented with an effective strategy. CAD management can involve significant changes in lifestyle, especially in physical activity and eating habits. Changing habitual behaviors can be extremely difficult for many patients, and it is paramount that they understand the importance of adherence to prescribed therapeutic and management strategies. Careful discussion and reassurance can help motivate patients to closely follow their regimens for cardiac rehabilitation, risk factor modification, and healthier lifestyle implementation.
