Risk Factors

A recent global study was conducted to determine the primary risk factors for myocardial infarction (MI) worldwide.31 Nine main risk factors were identified that account for most of the MI risk for both men and women worldwide:

  • Abnormal lipids
  • Smoking
  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Abdominal obesity
  • Psychosocial factors
  • Low fruit and vegetable consumption
  • Lack of regular alcohol consumption
  • Lack of physical activity 

In this section, important modifiable and nonmodifiable cardiovascular risk factors are discussed.
