CMS Releases Final 2011 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule

January 4, 2011

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released the final 2011 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule on November 2, 2010.  This 2,000-page regulation includes proposals and policies impacting all physicians paid through the Medicare system.

Overall, the rule offers good news for nuclear cardiology professionals.  Practice expense values for almost all nuclear cardiology codes have increased.  Technical rates for PET will be reduced due to reductions in hospital payments for this modality.  Below are two charts — one shows the values assigned to each code in 2010 and 2011; the other shows a comparison of payment rates from 2010 to 2011.

Fortunately, Congress passed legislation delaying a double-digit cut to all Medicare payments to physicians until January 1, 2012.  ASNC will work with CMS and Congress in the upcoming year to develop a long-term solution to the problems caused by the flawed sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula used to calculate physician payments.
